Buying Pomerol in the UK, my favourite French red wine, requires careful selection from the small selection of importers of this fabulous deep red wine.
Find out more about Pomerol Pomerol is one of those wines that is complemented and complements food in a quite magical fashion. Cheeses in particular as well as rich dinners with red meat, venison, and pheasant I have found go particularly well with this wine though personally I am quite happy to drink it just for the pleasure of its own qualities. As the winter nights draw in the pleasure of receiving a delivery of a dozen great wines while you get to sit with your feet up in front of the fire eating toasted muffins, reading a good novel is indescribable! Remember, it's worth letting Pomerol breath, and don't forget to pop down to the cheese shop well in advance so you can have some Camembert and Brie on hand that has had a chance to ripen. I have often thought Pomerol is a kind of fighting wine, it takes on the challenge of strongly flavoured cheese and creates a sort of magical influx of flavours, that other lesser wines just can't compete with. In a word, sublime! I've been traipsing around the web finding wines that I particularly like, and at long last found some decent Pomerol.
What is Pomerol?Pomerol is a fantastic wine grown in the ancient and excellent, in terms of wine making, scenery and pedigree, Bordeaux region of France. Bordeaux is located in the South West of France close to the coast and the premier wine trading port of Bordeaux. Bordeaux is the largest 'good vintage' district in the world. Pomerol is one of the best of the red wine 'appellations' (wine growing areas) within the Bordeaux district. Pomerol lies about 40 kilometers ( approximately 25 miles) to the east of Bordeaux. Along the banks of the beautiful Dordogne River. The area is practically exclusively given over to wine production. There is no real village centre in Pomerol just scattered Chateauxs and vineyards. Chateau's are the term used for vineyards in Bordeaux and each chateau can produce between 10 to 1000 barrels of wine. These Chateaus are not always large houses, some of them, particularly in the Pomerol area are just everyday houses but it is the name given to the produce of an individual vineyard producing wine in the area. Bordeaux wines are not usually ready to drink for at least two years after the wine has been bottled, and sometimes they are not ready for twenty years. They are therefore wines that many experts buy in small quantities and in bulk for laying down in their dusty wine cellars. The Romans first grew vines in the Pomerol region but for many years its wines were not known for their excellence. However times change and today Pomerol is one of the finest and most expensive of the Bordeaux vintages. |
